Bandhavgarh

A national park caressed by the Nature with rich historical legacy Bandhavgarh lying in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is a delight for the tourists. Falling under the territory of erstwhile rulers of Rewa, the history of this small town dates back to 3rd century A.D. Caves, Statues of several incarnations, Royal Bengal Tigers, Georges, Meadows and Springs Bandhavgarh has it all to be a tourist delight.

The national Park:- The winds in Bandhavgarh change their directions, the tall grasses here serves the purpose, the waters here doesn’t quenches but waits for the predator because amidst them lies the ruler of the jungle hidden waiting for its prey. Bandhavgarh serves as a niche for hundreds of these royal beasts the Royal Bengal Tigers. The tiger reserve of Bandhavgarh shot to fame with the documentary made on Charger and Sita one of the tiger couples of Bandhavgarh, the fame of the park has increased tremendously with the increase in number of tigers since then. Jackal, Bengal fox, sloth bear, rattle, grey (small Indian) and ruddy mongoose, striped hyena, wolf, wild dog, jungle cat, leopard are the prominent mammals of the park. Chital, Sambhar, Barking deer, Chinkara, Chausingha, Nilgai and wild pig can also be seen here. Porcupine, lesser bandicoot and three-striped palm squirrel are the common rodents while wild dog, Bengal fox, sloth bear, leopard and tiger are the mammals of Bandhavgarh which falls under the threatened category.

240 species of avian including vultures, grebes, cormorants, ducks, kingfishers, herons, egrets, storks, hornbills, barbets, woodpeckers, flycatchers can be seen nesting in Bandhavgarh.

Weather

The summers begin in Bandhavgarh in April and the mercury continues to rise till May. The area experiences rainfall between June to September while it witnessed winter from October to March.

The park remains open from October to June for visitors as the weather is feasible for excursion of Bandhavgarh during these months.


In & Around

Sidhababa:- The holy temple dedicated to Sidhababa is the site where the Tigers are sighted most frequently within the park. Covered with large marshy meadows wild like Sambhars, Cheetals, painted strokes and Wild boar can be commonly sighted here.

Chakradhara:- The large open meadows of Chakradhara are the popular points of sighting the Tiger. The water and rich flora serves as food for the herbivorous fauna of the jungle while the tall grasses act as hiding enclosures for the predators. The open areas of this meadow play as hunting ground for the wilds of the Bandhavgarh all through the year.

Ghorademaon:- It is the site of a deep natural George flowing within the park all through the year.

Bandhavgarh Fort:-  One hour trek covering some 12th century abandoned temples and statues of several incarnations of many Gods and Goddesses brings you to this 2500 year old fort which once served as an abode for poet Kalidasa.  At the origin of the river Charaganga, the 65 ft high horizontally laid idol of Lord Vishnu can be seen on Shesh Shaiya or reclining on a seven hooded serpent.

Bhagel Museum:- It demonstrates several personal belongings of the rulers of Rewa who treated Bandhavgarh as their hunting grounds. A white tiger captured from the woods of Bandhavgarh has been stuffed and kept for display.

Bhamera Dam:- A huge water reservoir falling under the territory of Panpatha Sanctuary, it is an ideal destination for Bird Lovers.

Caves:- Bari Gufa or the Large Cave is the largest manmade cave of the park dated back to 10th century A.D. Carved out of huge blocks of Sandstone they once served as hiding points for the armies of the Rulers of Medieval period.

Three cave point:- These cave today serving as the dwelling for the tigers, sloth bear and leopards exemplifies the architectural style prevalent in medieval India.
