Guwahati

Guwahati lying in the Indian state of Assam is studded with many jewels of tourist attractions. Popular for staging the world’s largest tea auctions and for its oil service centre, it is the commercial capital of entire North Eastern India. The city is blessed with numerous stunning natural trails; it was rightly being called Pragjyotishpura meaning the Eastern city of light.

Prime places of tourist interest in Assam are:-

Kamakhya Temple:- It is one of the significant shrines of India where genital organs belonging to Devi Sati has fallen. The temple was rebuilt in 1665 after being destroyed by invaders.

Assam state Museum:- This state museum is dedicated to archeology, ethnography and natural history. It has good display of weavings, musical instruments and a large sculptor gallery.

Navgarh Temple:- Situated on the Chtitrachal Hill, this temple is dedicated to the nine planets and is an important seat of astronomy and  astrology.

Umananda Temple:- Located amidst the river, this temple with Lord Shiva as its presiding deity is the main attraction of the peacock island.

Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden:- The Assam State zoo exhibits the Assam’s famous one horned Rhinos apart from being adobe to Tigers, Leopards, Elephants and several other avi fauna.

Apart from all the above mentioned sites, the Tea Gardens spread across Guwahati are also one of the beautiful places to visit. The ladies with big cane baskets hung around their back and busy in collecting these tea leaves amidst the green bushes presents one of the marvelous scenes which you must capture during your visit to Guwahati.

Guwahati experiences summer between the months of March and June. Rainfall happens here between July to September. The winters start out breaking here from October onwards. Though heavy rains are experienced in Guwahati even in winters but the climate remains pleasant for tourists. The best time to visit Guwahati is during the summers and the winters when the climate remains favorable for excursions and sightseeings.

 

Hajo:- 25 kms from Guwahati, Hajo is significant religious destination which shows integrity of Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. It has the Puca Mosque built by an Iraqi prince – turned- preacher who traveled to Assam from Iraq in 12th century to spread the teachings of Prophet Mohammed. It also has the famous Hayagriba Mahadeva Temple. Journey through a long stone stairway takes you to this temple. Hajo is also known for its bell metal works.

Sualkuchi:- 32 kms from Guwahati, Sualkuchi is famous as a centre for silk weaving. The most important being the Muga silk which is golden in color by nature. Endi and Pat silks are also woven here.

Chandubi:- 64kms from Guwahati, Chandubi is a picnic spot owing to the presence of a natural lagoon here. The activities like rowing and fishing keeps you engaged here.

Bashishtha:- 12 kms from Guwahati, Bashishtha is a small village studded with a waterfall which has converted it as a popular picnic spot.

Darranga:- Darranga is merely 80 kms away from the Bhutan border and is one of the best places for shopping of woolens manufactured by the local Bhutia community.

Madan Kamdev:- 35 kms from Guwahati, Madan Kamdev has got some interesting sites of archeological remains.

Manas Wildlife Sanctuary:- 350 kms from Guwahati, Manas wildlife sanctuary is home for around 19 rare species. The core area which spreads upto the hillocks of Bhutan is known for being adobe to an impressive population of Tigers, the golden langur, the rarest hispid hare and pigmy hogs. It is also the dwelling for many one horned rhinos, elephants, wild buffalo, gaur, swamp deer, capped langur and clouded leopard.
