Jodhpur
Popularly called the Blue city, Jodhpur the second largest city of Rajasthan has got alluring monuments in form of places and forts to attract the tourists. This erstwhile capital of Marwar is known in the history for its fierce and brave martyrs. Located on the edge of the Thar Desert, this city founded by Rao Jodha is surrounded by a 10 km long wall meant for the security of the masses and has got eight gates serving as the entrance points.
Main places of interest:-
Mehrangarh Fort:- The fort spread in an area of 5 sq km is located amidst the heart of the city. Built on an altitude of 125 m, this fort has been the pride of Marwar for being the invincible one. It has got seven gates serving as the entrance. The prominent ones being the Jaypol, the Fatehpol and the Lohapol. Beside the Lohapol one can see the fifteen palm imprints of the widows of Maharana Man Singh who went Sati after being throwing themselves alive on his funeral pyre in 1843 an incident whose thought itself can send shivers down you spines. The fort displays the artillery system which was typical of Rajputana warfare. The palaces within the fort today exemplify the Rajputana architecture while behind the fortified walls lies buried various episodes of love, betrayal, heroism and sacrifice.
The museum in the fort displays the Palanquins and howdahs along with other items of royal use like musical instruments, costumes and furniture.
Palaces:-
Umaid Bhawan:- This splendid edifice was constructed with the thought of providing employment to the famine struck population of Jodhpur. The construction started in 1929 and it took 16 years to complete this palace made of marbles and pink sandstone.
Jaswant Thada:- This massive marble cenotaph was built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant who died fighting with Mughal Emperor Jahangir.
Government Museum:- Amidst the Umaid Garden, this museum has a rare collection of miniature paintings, portraits, weapons, textiles apart from the images of Jain thirthankars.
Rai ki Bag Palace, Umed Garden, Achal Nath Shivalaya, Raj Rancchod Ji Temple, Siddhnath and Ganesh Temple are the other prominent places to visit in Jodhpur.

Jodhpur primarily experiences three main weathers. The summers begin here in March and continue till October. Being in the close proximity to the Thar Desert, Jodhpur hardly witnesses rains. The summers here are very hot and unpleasant making it inconvenient for tourism. The winters onset here from November and remains till February. This is the best time to visit Jodhpur.
Mandore Gardens:- 8 kms from Jodhpur, Mandore was once the capital of Marwar. This beautiful garden has got the cenotaph of the rulers of Jodhpur. The most striking element here is the hall of heroes where 16 huge figure belonging to various Hindu and folk deities have been carved out of a single rock.
Balsammand Lake and Palace:- 5 kms from the city, built on a hilltop facing a water reservoir called the Balsammand Lake was built as the summer resort for the rulers of Jodhpur. The garden filled with pools full of lilies and artificial waterfalls is a delight for the eyes.
Oshian (65 kms), Kaylana Lake (8 kms), Gida Bishnoi and Jaswant Sagar Dam are the other prominent places of tourist attractions around Jodhpur.
