Kumarakom

Lying near the city of Kottayam, Kumarakom is a small village in the southernmost corner of India. It is a gorgeous tourism destination where the fresh waters of the Vembanad lake criss crosses giving birth to numerous creeks, lagoons brooks and waterways. A landscape dominated by woods covered with Mangroves and coconut trees, farmlands with lush green paddy fields, sprawling waterways, Kumarakom is like a wonderland with enchanting beauties.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary:- Spread in an area of 14 acres, it serves as an abode for numerous species of avi fauna like night herons, purple moorhen, brahminy kites, teals, egrets, waterfowls and Indian fruit bats. The sanctuary is also the dwelling for many verities of flora most of which serve as the nesting point for these avians.

Thazhathangady Juma Masjid:- Built over a millennium ago, exquisite wood carvings and the splendid architecture of this one of the oldest mosques of India attracts scores of visitors still today.

Aymanam:- Referred as history house in the novel called ‘God of Small Things’ one of the international best sellers written by Arundhati Roy is a heritage building today. The small house in the Ayemenem village where Roy has spent few years of her childhood has been renovated and converted as a crowd puller by the Taj Group.

Kumarakom has got some splendid house boats floating on the Vembanad Lake. Cut off from rest of the world these house boats could be a unique and thrilling destination for hosting your conferences and meeting.

The summers are experienced here between March to June. The monsoons arrive here in mid June and continues till September. The winters are witnessed between October to February. Though the enchanting serenes of Kumarakom pull tourists all across the year, the best time to visit Kumarakom is between Septmeber to March when the cliamate remains pleasant.


Kottayam:- It is a small town near Kumarakom famous for its old churches. The prime ones being the Cheriapally church and Valiya Palli Church.

a) Cheriayaplly:- Lying in Kottayam, this church built in 1979 by Portuguese with the Local Hindu ruler is a mix of western and traditional Hindu Architecture. Dedicated to Mother Mary, the murals on the inner walls painted out of the colors made of vegetable dyes, suspended light of the halls and the granite pillars are the prime attraction of this shrine.

b) St Mary's Knanaya Church, Valiya Palli :- Built in 1550, this Church is one of the oldest one in India and marks the early days of arrival of Christianity in India.  It has got two granite crosses carved out of a single stone and bearing inscriptions from the Pahlavi language which was the official language of the Persian Dynasty.

Apart from this it also has the St.Mary's Church Kuravilangad having an old bell bearing inscription undeciphered till date. St.Mary's Church at Bharananganam and the St.Joseph's Monastery Church at Mannanam have entombed the mortal remains of Alphonsa and the Blessed Father Chavara.

The villages of Pala and Kanjirappally are the sites of Rubber plantation while Ettumanoor has a Shiva Temple known for its murals and sculptors and the 5000 year old Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple with Lord Shiva as its presiding and splendid murals which depicts the stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls:- 2 kms from Kumarakom, Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls are splendid picnic spot with streams cascading down from mountains to form a lake. There lies an island amidst this lake called Pathiramanal. This enchanting destination is also popular amongst the migratory avian tourists coming from far of places like Iran and Afghanistan.

Vagamon:- 64 kms from Kottayam located at an elevation of 1100 m Vagamon is a trekker’s delight. Lush green tea garden, gorgeous valleys and impressive meadows are the prime attraction here.

Elaveezha Poonchira:- Caressed by forested hills, this is another popular picnic spot near Kumarakom.
