Pushkar

Pushkar, a town situated in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan, is among the five sacred Dhams (pilgrimage site) for Hindus devotees. Often referred as "Tirth Raj" - the king of pilgrimage sites, the destination has become very popular among the foreign tourists in recent years.

Pushkar, one of the oldest cities in India, rests on the Pushkar Lake Shore. According to the beliefs about the holy place, Lord Brahma performed penance in Pushkar for 60,000 years to have a glimpse of Lord Vishnu.

The place is famous for many temples situated here. Of which, most temples are not very old because many temples were ruined during Muslim conquests in the region, and were rebuilt in later years.

The place can be approached through Air, Rail or Road networks as Pushkar is well connected by all the transport networks. Sanganer Airport at Jaipur is the nearest Airport, 146 km (91 miles) from Pushkar. Pushkar’s own Railway Station has started operations from January 2012, connecting it to the nearest broad Railway Station at Ajmer. Further, Pushkar is located just 11 km (6.8 mile) from main bus stand of Ajmer.

Pushkar is a city of the Indian state of Rajasthan which has a hot and arid climate due to its close proximity with the Thar Desert. So, the climate of Pushkar is mainly dry and hot. However, Pushkar is less dry and arid than the rest of Rajasthan due to its featuring a prolonged rainy season making the climate here very humid. So, the climate of Pushkar is more favorable for travel and tourism than that in the other regions of Rajasthan.

Pushkar Lak: Pushkar’s life revolves around the famous holy Pushar Lake. This sacred lake makes Pushkar a famous Hindu pilgrimage site. According to a legend, when a lotus fell from Lord Brahma’s hand into a vale, the lake appeared at that place.

Brahma Temple: Temple of Lord Brahma, a life-size idol of Lord Brahma, is the most significant temple in Pushkar, and the only Hindu shrine in the world where Lord Brahma is worshipped. Hence, the name of the place is Pushkar, which refers to blue lotus flower in Sanskrit.

Savitri Temple: Located at the top of the Ratnagiri Hill in Rajesthan, the temple is dedicated to Savitri, the wife of Lord Brahma.

Old Pushkar: Located about 5 kms from Pushkar Lake, the Old Pushkar Lake was reconstructed in the past years. Some ancient texts say notify Old Pushkar’s equal cultural and religious significance for the pilgrims.

Bhandarej, Bhangarh and Fort Madhopur: Bhandarej, Bhangarh and Fort Madhopur are located not very far from Pushkar. These places can be reached from Jaipur via Dausa Town by road.

Ajmer: Lying outside the city boundaries of Pushkar, Ajmer is the nearest most visited tourist places.

Kishangarh: Kishangarh is situated 27 Kms from Ajmer, and is renowned for its miniature paintings, popularly known as Bani Thani.
